Acupuncture Coverage on Maui: What to Know Before Your First Visit

One of the most common questions I get is: "Will my insurance cover acupuncture?" Honestly, it depends — but the good news is, it very well might!

I'm so excited to share that I'm now accepting HMSA, and Kaiser insurance for acupuncture here on Maui. That means if you have an active health insurance plan, there's a good chance I can see you without it breaking the bank. Integrative medicine and acupuncture affordable?! Yes, please to that!

So how does it work?

Whether acupuncture is covered really comes down to your specific plan — not every plan includes alternative healthcare services. For HMSA and Kaiser, you'll want to check whether your plan has an ASH (American Specialty Health) rider, which is what unlocks coverage for acupuncture and other integrative services.

Not sure what your plan covers? No stress — just reach out to me directly and I'm happy to help you figure it out!

What if my insurance isn't listed?

Don't give up just yet! I'd still encourage you to request reimbursement directly from your insurance provider. They may not cover everything, but even partial reimbursement is worth it. I can give you a receipt with all the info your insurance needs to process the claim — easy peasy.

What does insurance typically cover acupuncture for?

Great question! Common conditions covered include neck pain and low back pain — which, not surprisingly, are two of the most frequent things I treat in clinic.

Come see me upcountry!

Whether you're coming from Kihei, Lahaina, Kula, Makawao, or Haiku, my office is conveniently located upcountry, in the heart of Makawao town  — right across from the general store, above the galleries.

Have questions or want to know if your plan is covered? Reach out — I'd love to hear from you! Acupuncture should be accessible to everyone, and I'm stoked to be able to be a small part of removing barriers to this incredible medicine!

With all the aloha,

Dr. Emily
